Retaining Wall Installation in Holland, MI: What You Need to Know Before You Build

If your Holland property has a slope, a grade change, or soil that creeps toward your driveway every spring, you've probably thought about a retaining wall. Before you call a contractor or start pricing block at the hardware store, here's what you need to know about building a retaining wall that actually holds in West Michigan.
Why Holland Properties Fail at Retaining Walls
Most retaining wall failures in Holland come down to two things: poor drainage and inadequate base preparation.
Holland's combination of clay-heavy inland soil, sandy lakeshore soil, and a 42-inch frost depth creates conditions that destroy walls built without proper engineering. Water trapped behind a wall freezes in winter, expands, and pushes the wall forward. Do that 30-40 times a year — Holland's average annual freeze-thaw cycle count — and within a few seasons you have a wall that's leaning, cracking, or failing outright.
We've rebuilt a lot of retaining walls that other companies installed. The mistakes are almost always the same: no drainage pipe behind the wall, no geogrid reinforcement, and a base that wasn't deep enough to get below the frost line.
Holland's Soil Types Change Everything
One thing most contractors don't tell you: your installation approach should depend heavily on where you are in Holland.
West of US-31 (lakeshore, sandy soil):Â Sandy soil drains quickly, which is good, but it also shifts and settles. Walls on sandy soil need deeper bases and careful compaction at every layer. Drainage is less of a pressure issue, but erosion and lateral movement are bigger concerns.
East of US-31 (inland, clay soil): Clay holds water. A lot of it. Hydrostatic pressure — the force water exerts on a wall — is the primary failure cause for walls on clay soil. Every retaining wall we build in Zeeland, inland Holland, and the townships includes a perforated drain pipe running the full length of the wall with a proper outlet. Skip that step on clay soil and the wall is on a timer.
If a contractor gives you the same quote and process regardless of where your property sits, that's a red flag.
What Goes Into a Retaining Wall That Lasts
A proper Holland retaining wall installation includes:
Base below frost line. We excavate and install a compacted gravel base deep enough to account for Holland's 42-inch frost depth. Walls that start failing after one or two winters almost always have a base that didn't go deep enough.
Drainage system. Perforated pipe behind the wall, wrapped in filter fabric, surrounded by drainage aggregate, with a proper daylight outlet at the end. This is what keeps hydrostatic pressure from building up and pushing your wall over.
Geogrid reinforcement for taller walls. For walls over 3-4 feet, geogrid layers tie the wall back into the soil mass behind it — creating a structure far stronger than the blocks alone. This is the difference between a wall that holds for 40 years and one that leans by year five.
Proper batter (backward lean). Every retaining wall should lean slightly back into the slope — typically 1 inch back for every foot of height. This counteracts the outward pressure of the soil behind it.
Cap stones. Not just aesthetic. Cap stones seal the top of the wall, protect the structure from water infiltration, and prevent freeze-thaw damage at the most vulnerable point.
Block vs. Natural Stone vs. Boulder — The Holland Answer
Segmental block is the most popular choice for Holland properties, and for good reason. Modern interlocking block is engineered specifically for retaining applications, handles freeze-thaw better than most alternatives, and offers a wide range of styles and colors. Best for walls 2-8 feet tall in most residential applications.
Natural stone — fieldstone, limestone, or quarried stone — gives a timeless, premium look that works especially well on lakefront properties and historic Holland homes. Extremely long-lasting, but higher material cost and more labor-intensive to install correctly.
Boulder walls are ideal for larger grade changes, shoreline stabilization, and properties where the natural, rugged look fits the landscape. Very durable. The boulders themselves don't fail — the base underneath them can.
Timber walls are the most budget-friendly option but understand the tradeoff: timber lasts 15-25 years in Michigan's climate. Block and stone walls last 40-50+ years. Over time, block is usually the better investment.
How to Know If You Need a Retaining Wall
Not every slope needs a wall. Here are the situations where a retaining wall is the right solution:
Soil is actively eroding toward your driveway, foundation, or neighbor's property
You have a slope steeper than 3:1 (3 feet of horizontal run for every 1 foot of rise)
You want to create flat, usable space on a sloped lot
Water is pooling or running along your foundation after rain
You need to cut into a slope to install a patio, driveway, or other hardscape feature
You have an existing wall that's leaning, cracking, or separating
Timing and Scheduling for Holland
Spring and early summer are the busiest seasons for retaining wall installation in West Michigan. If you're thinking about a wall for this year, now is the time to get on the schedule — most quality contractors are booking May and June installations right now. Waiting until May to call usually means a July or August start at the earliest.
The best time to actually install a retaining wall in Holland is late spring through early fall — May through September. We need dry conditions for excavation and base compaction, and the ground needs to be fully thawed. Rush jobs in wet spring conditions produce poor base compaction and walls that move within a season.
