Spring Cleanup Holland MI: When to Start and What to Do First

If you live in Holland, Michigan, you already know that spring doesn't arrive on the calendar — it arrives when Lake Michigan decides to let it. That lake-effect influence means Holland's spring cleanup window is different from the rest of Michigan, and getting the timing right makes a real difference for your lawn and landscape.
Why Holland's Spring Timing Is Different
Holland's proximity to Lake Michigan delays spring by two to three weeks compared to inland Michigan. The lake keeps soil temperatures colder longer, especially on properties west of US-31. Start too early and you'll compact saturated soil, damage emerging root systems, and waste mulch on beds that still have frost underneath. Start too late and you'll miss the critical window before perennials push through and make cleanup harder.
As a general rule for Holland-area properties:
West of US-31 (lakeshore):Â Mid-April to early May
East of US-31 (inland Holland, Zeeland):Â Late March to mid-April
The test: Soil should be workable — not muddy, not frozen. If your boot sinks more than an inch, wait.
What to Tackle First
When conditions are right, start with these in order:
1. Debris removal first. Clear winter-damaged branches, matted leaves, and organic debris from beds before doing anything else. Debris left on beds traps moisture and creates the exact conditions fungal disease thrives in.
2. Cut back ornamental grasses and perennials. Grasses should be cut to 4–6 inches before new growth emerges. Wait too long and you'll be cutting around green shoots, which damages the plant.
3. Edge the beds. Clean edge lines define the whole property. This one step changes how a yard looks more than almost anything else.
4. Fresh mulch. Apply 2–3 inches of fresh mulch after edging and bed cleanup. Hardwood or cedar mulch performs best in West Michigan's climate. Mulch too early and you trap cold in the soil — wait until the ground has warmed.
5. First mow. Cut at 3–3.5 inches, never removing more than a third of the blade at once. Holland lawns coming out of winter are stressed — a high first cut protects them.
Don't Forget the City of Holland Cleanup Window
The City of Holland's annual Spring Clean-Up Program runs March 8 through April 5, 2026. If you're a city resident, this is your window to rake yard clippings, shrub trimmings, and small branches to the curb for pickup. Scheduling your professional spring cleanup to happen before April 5 means you can take advantage of city pickup for debris hauling. If it is later, we can take your leaves & debris with us.
